Reddit Talk- Another take on Clubhouse

Reddit is one of the most popular social media platforms. It has evolved from just a social media site to a place where people can discover and debate various topics. Recently, the platform announced that it is all ready to launch an alternative to Clubhouse. Reddit today announced a competitor to Clubhouse in live discussion groups via voice known as, “Reddit Talk”.

There has been no lunch date announced yet however it will be available on iOS and Android. It is worth noting that the release date may be soon since Reddit has begun inviting moderators to join a waitlist.

Clubhouse and Reddit Talk

Clubhouse has gained major attraction due to its voice chats. The social media platform offers a more relaxed way to discuss issues via voice since texts are seen as impersonal. For now, the application is only limited to Apple devices whereas it is highly likely that Facebook, as well as Reddit, will be OS agnostic.

According to recent reports, Reddit Talk is described as being in an early testing period. Once the tests officially begin, any moderator will be able to start a talk and non-moderator level Redditors can listen in via an Android or iOS device. After the tests have eliminated bugs Reddit will give access to Reddit moderators to invite other users to participate. It is quite surprising that there was no mention of Windows in the announcement hence indicating that this product might be limited to mobiles for now.

Further Details

While Reddit Talks’ full functionality is yet to be revealed, it aims to provide users with multiple ways to communicate. In an announcement, Reddit said, “We’re testing ways for hosts to customize the look and feel of Reddit Talk through emojis and background colors. Redditors can change their avatar’s appearance to fit the talk as well. We’re also exploring features to support AMAs and other types of conversations.”

To ensure users have a seamless and unproblematic chatting experience, Reddit moderators will have full control to set boundaries and rules for each of the listening rooms. The moderators will have complete control over the voice chat and can remove, mute, and invite listeners. The image below is just one of the possibilities of how the moderation screen will look like.

Reddit is encouraging communities to try the feature once it has been officially released. It has even listed down some of how Reddit Talk can be useful. “You can start talks for Q&As, AMAs, lectures, sports-radio-style discussions, community feedback sessions, or simply to give community members a place to hang out.”

How Reddit Talk Works

Reddit Talks will exist within individual communities and at first, only a moderator can start a talk while Redditors can join the “room” to listen in and participate with emojis. During the tests, listeners can raise a hand and be permitted to speak by a moderator.

Quite an easy process and innovative way to communicate with hundreds of users at once. To ensure the platform is not misused, the moderators will have all the power but they can invite co-hosts to speak with them.

Other Clubhouse Variants

Reddit is not the first social media platform that has made its version of Clubhouse. Since its rise to fame, major social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram are working on their version of these “Voice Chats”. Instagram has announced, “Live Rooms”, which enables multiple users to go live at once.

Four users can initiate a live stream at once and carry out promotions, debates, or just have a lively chat. The feature is much similar to Clubhouse with the exception that the video will be on. This was seen as a disadvantage since hosts conducting the life will have to be camera-ready and make adjustments to their background. The appeal of Clubhouse is users can simply connect and talk without the need to show their videos hence no hassle. Instagram seems to have missed the point but it is something different and gives influencers opportunities to reach a greater audience.

Summing Up

Reddit Talk is for sure an innovative way to connect with other Reddit users. Since the testing is underway, it may be released sooner rather than later. Not much can be said about the feature since the information revealed was not much in detail and outlines the basic purpose and aim of Reddit Talk. We’ll have to wait till its release to fully understand its functionality.
